Good Great N/A So So Good
Hadn't been in a while, so a return stop was in order. Sampled those new to me on a recent visit. Stock ale, very mild--good session beer. One Hopper IPA; simcoe hops (one of my favorites!) makes for a really nice beer, not over the top, but big enough @ 8.25%. Also tried some "micro batch beers"; 15 gal. or less per batch. Unfiltered Cherry-O was very carbonated, slight cherry in finish, roasty flavor throughout. Oak aged Black IPA-hops in nose, flavors clashing with each other, not pleasant at all. Bar not very busy, server made herself scarce after my initial order.

Went for lunch with friends. What a beautiful building! The "Lost Nation Pale Ale" is as good as I have had anywhere. They didn't have an IPA but promised me one was on the way. Great Food! Try the potato ale soup.

I'm posting this review based on a visit earlier this year - I was visiting family in the area and was able to swing by the WBC one pleasant afternoon in time for happy hour. I sampled the Daisy Cutter and the Lost Nation - both were superb and splendidly executed. I'll have to say the Daisy Cutter provides the drinker a rush of complex flavors - it was my favorite and if I wasn't driving I would have polished off several. The service was friendly and responsive. We sat at the bar and took full appreciation of the fine work the owners put in the building, which was originally a railroad service structure. They are to be lauded for establishing such a class operation. May they thrive and prosper!

Awesome! Awesome! Awesome! Awesome! Awesome!
I visited this brewpub on May 17th 2007 and it has gone through some remarkable changes since my 8/13/02 review. The wait staff was attentive and knowledgable. The management team was responsive to customer needs. The glassware for serving samplers has changed to a thicker glass and has moved from a tulip glass to a snifter. There is also a new brewer, Jack Kephart is now filling those boots. I was able to taste the following brews on my visit; Hazy Days Hefewiezen 5%abv, The Black Douglas 4.9%abv, Bicentennial Pilsner 5.2%abv, Legislation Ale 11.5%, Willoughby Wheat 3.6%abv, Lost Nation Pale Ale 5.2%abv, Railway Razz 4.9%abv, Daisy Cutter IPA 7.2%abv, Last Stop Stout 4.3%abv, and Pride of Willoughby Porter. All the brews were of an excellent quality and would be well within parameters of their respective styles. I expect to see Mr. Kephart's name on future GABF medals soon if he keeps up this quality. I am glad that I stopped by to give this place another chance. I will be back again as soon as my travels bring me back.

I would like to take a moment to respond to Mr. Sutula's response to my last review on 8/13/02. I believe it is the responsibility of restarant / bar management to make sure that their patrons have the best experience possible. If a customer receives bad service or is served beverages in broken glassware then it is management's responsibility to make the situation right. I believe that it is the reponsiblity of reviewers like myself to bring these problems to their attention. When management does not care about their patrons which is the experience that I had, then they probably don't care about the beer either. I therefore have a responsiblity to share it with other pubcrawler members. If that brewpub goes out of business because they don't care about their customers or beer then they probably should go out of business. Clearly I had a bad experience back in 2002 but I still gave them a decent review. It is also evident that they have made some major changes that are all for the positive. Watch out Great Lakes you have a neighbor to contend with just a few miles to the east.

This place is in an old trolley car repair shop ~ neat place. If you're trying to find it, it is in the parking lot BEHIND its street address. There is an alley between two stores to get to the place. The beer was ok by my liking; the only one that stood out as particularly good was the pumpkin ale. Wednesday nights they have a live 50's music band that is really good. Overall, a nice place to visit.

After such a terrific visit here last summer, we stopped here again on our way to the Midwest. Again, we were not disappointed. We had a great time with the bartender, Nikki, and some people who frequent the Brewery often. We decided on appetizers for our meals and each one of them, at "happy hour" prices, were excellent. The pizza, pretzels, quesadilla, eggrolls were terrific.

We shared a sampler - consisting of 9 beers, including their special Vanilla Porter. Although we are not "into" Wheats or Wits, they were both good beers. The Railway Razz was a great raspberry. Our favorites were the Hopfull American Brown Ale (great), the Bavarian Dark Lager (double great!), and the Pride of Willough Porter (fantastic!).

Judging by the full bar and dining area, Willoughby continues to do things right! This will continue to be a regular stop for us on our way to Cincinnati or Chicago. Thanks for the great time! And Nikki is a perfect bartender.

Overall, the beers aren't too ambitious (3.5%-5.0%), but all are generally clean and thirst-quenching, even if they don't fit my favorite styles. Two new ones to me this trip were Cherry Red Ale, which I thought was a little too much "kids' drink-ish" for me. It would be pretty refreshing on a hot day, however. Coal Shovel Black Lager starts nicely, but fades rather quickly. Please, if you get directions from their site, DON'T use 271 EXPRESS north, or you're in for a bit of an adventure like I was.

This is yet another one of my frquent stops when I make it up to Cleveland. Great atmosphere, and plenty of great food and drink! Although huge, this is a very established and well loved brewpub so get there a little early if you want to avoid the weekend crowd. The one thing I would like to see, is a little more variety. They seem to have the same beers every time including rotating the same seasonals. I would love to walk in and find some high gravity treats on tap!

Daisy Cutter IPA, hop heads rejoice! Best IPA I've had in quite some time. Spring Bok, what a flavorful, complex, malty beer. Vienna lager, smooth, very malty, clean, and enjoyable. Good food and service to boot, but the beer is what matters! Great brewpub!

Nice setting. The place is huge! I like to see brewpubs in the middle of a town's main business district such as this one.

We were there for a late lunch on the day before Thanksgiving. Attractive location in a restored old interurban car barn in historic suburban village. All the beers were above average in quality and stylistically accurate without any flaws, even if none of them was a standout. The food was good and the portions generous. Worth a stop.

Made the trip out east for the first time while in Cleveland, it is about a 15-20 minute drive from downtown. Willoughby is in an old rail car repair building which gives it a pretty cool atmosphere. We sat at the bar and I ordered a sampler. As I recall there were 7 beers, with their seasonal being a light beer? Apparently they had just run out of the pumpkin. Actually while I was there they ran out of two more beers. No one beer stands out in my mind, although I did order a pint of the amber, after finishing of the sampler. I had the spinach artichoke dip which was very good. The place began to fill up with people and smoke and we decided to leave. All in all it is a nice place, but I wouldn't drive by Great Lakes again to make a special trip.
